Alkynes: Anotha Bond

Gang. jOeCHEMists. We've made it to the end of Organic Chemistry I. But don't take your foot off the gas--we need to give Alkynes the respect it deserves and finish strong the semester strong. Luckily, much of the chemistry we'll talk about is an extension of the concepts we learned in the Alkenes series: we just have an extra bond! But, we'll certainly learn new chemistry, such as hydrogenating triple bonds, how to make terminal alkynes good nulceophiles, and keto-enol tautomerism. Let's finish OChem I with a bang, gang.

Worksheet(s) & Solution(s):

Videos:

  1. Intro to Alkynes--How to Make Them and Other Basics

    https://joechem.io/videos/92 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we get our feet wet with alkynes, talk about how to make them from alkanes/alkenes, and establish some basics we'll need to master and use them for more involved chemistry.

  2. Hydrogenating Triple Bonds to Cis/Trans Double Bonds

    https://joechem.io/videos/93 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at the different ways we can hydrogenate triple bonds: to a cis double bond, to a trans double bond, and all the way down to a fully hydrogenated triple bond.

  3. Electrophilic Additions to Triple Bonds

    https://joechem.io/videos/94 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at a few Markovnikov additions to triple bonds (think adding HBr, water, Br2/CCl4). We've done this before with double bonds, so its nothing REALLY new.

  4. Using Terminal Alkynes as Nucleophiles

    https://joechem.io/videos/95 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at how we can use acetylide (or any terminal alkyne that has been deprotonated) as a nucleophile and attack carbonyls and perform Sn2.

  5. Hydration of Triple Bonds

    https://joechem.io/videos/96 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at what happens when we add water to a triple bond, the same Markovnikov Addition reaction that we've done before with double bonds (and, spoiler alert: the reaction proceeds the same way!).

  6. Keto-enol Tautomerism

    https://joechem.io/videos/97 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at the phenomenon that is keto-enol tautomerism and dig into the equilibrium, which side is favored, and why that side of the equilibrium is favored.
