Ethers and Epoxides--Alcohol's Cousins

Fresh off of our conquest of alcohols, we move striaght into some relatives of the alcohol functional group: ethers and epoxides. We'll start things off with a recap and discussion regarding carbocation stability and shifts. Then, we'll move on to talk about reactions of ethers and how to use them as protecting groups. Finally, we'll round out the series by looking at attacking epoxides and how the regiochemistry of attacks changes based on acidic vs basic conditions. It'll be a fun time from start to finish, so let's get a'learning.

Worksheet(s) & Solution(s):

Videos:

  1. Dehydration with Sulfuric Acid, an E1 Mechanism

    https://joechem.io/videos/56 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at the E1 reaction when you treat an alcohol with H2SO4 and heat, walking through the mechanism and even looking at this reaction when theres a dreaded carbocation shift (a classic question I've seen on MANY exams).

  2. All About Ethers

    https://joechem.io/videos/57 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we take a look at ethers--their properties, how to make them, and a whole bunch more.

  3. Using Ethers as Protecting Groups

    https://joechem.io/videos/119 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we tackle how to use ethers as protecting groups (a classic problem type I've seen on exams towards the end of Ochem I as well as Ochem I final exams)

  4. Attacking Epoxides in Acidic and Basic Conditions (Mechanisms)

    https://joechem.io/videos/58 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below the video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we'll look at how to make epoxides (and talk about what they are), and how the pathway of how to make them changes based on acidic or basic conditions. 5. Attacking Epoxides in Acidic and Basic Conditions (More Examples)

    https://joechem.io/videos/115 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we spend some more quality time with epoxides and look to how we attack them in acidic vs basic conditions while predicting the correct stereochemical outcome.
