Alcohol(s) for All

jOeCHEMists, I know I said it before, but NOW the real fun begins. Up until this point we've been filling our organic toolbox full of skills, and it's time we put our foot on the gas. It's time to learn reactions. It's time to learn mechanisms. It's time to learn how to design organic syntheses and solve synthesis problems. And we start this new chapter of our journey with alcohols. In this series, we're going to learn how to oxidize & reduce alcohols as well as how to perform Sn2 on them (even though alcohols aren't great leaving groups). But, most importantly, we'll learn the Grignard Reaction--marking a huge moment in our organic careers. The Grignard Reaction allows us to make carbon-carbon connections, and that will lead us straight into tackling our first synthesis problem. There's a lot of fun to be had in this section, gang. Let's get it.

  2. Reduction Reactions, Transforming Carbonyls to Alcohols

https://joechem.io/videos/52 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we go talk about Reduction Reactions (reducing carbonyls to alcohols) using LiAlH4 and NaBH4

  3. Using SOCl2 to Replace Alcohols with Chlorides via Sn2

https://joechem.io/videos/117 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at a nifty Sn2 reaction that enables us to replace alcohols with chlorides. For a VERY similar reaction (aka one that does this but with Br), check out https://joechem.io/videos/118

  4. Using PBr3 to Replace Alcohols with Bromides via Sn2

https://joechem.io/videos/118 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we look at a nifty Sn2 reaction that enables us to replace alcohols with bromides. For a VERY similar reaction (aka one that does this but with Cl), check out https://joechem.io/videos/117

  5. The Grignard Reaction--Introduction and Mechanism

https://joechem.io/videos/53 for video on jOeCHEM and attached worksheet + solution (below video on jOeCHEM aka the link). In this video, we take our first look at the Grignard reaction, the beginning of a reaction that is VERY important in Organic Chemistry. For more advanced practice such as synthesis problems (using the Grignard Rxn), check out https://joechem.io/videos/116

  6. Synthesis Practice with the Grignard Reaction
